The Best Aquarium Snails for Algae Control: Inca Snail
They do like some other
structures in your aquarium looking for algae and to graze on the tank glass.
In case you own a sand tank bottom, they may submerge throughout the day and
come out during the nighttime. They are reasonably simple to care for but there
certainly are a couple things to remember in regards to caring for this
particular snail.
They are herbivores, so
they're going to need a lot of greens in their own diet. This will provide lots
of nourishment for your own snails. Avoid keeping them with fish that are known
snail eaters like the fish in the loach family. Goldfish are also proven to
nibble at them ocassionally. Some fish will even nip at the snail's tentacles,
sometimes nipping off most of it. This does not appear to worry the snail and
often times it will grow back.
Gold Inca Snail Character & Conduct
A Gold Inca Snail could
be very active during times when the tanks lights are on going through the
aquarium on the hunt for food, interesting locations to research, or a quiet
spot to have a rest. When the tank lights are off, a Gold Inca Snail can also
be quite energetic. Inca Snails are often busy feeding at night in complete
darkness.
Reproduction
There really are a
couple things to be considered to breed apple snails:
- Since Inca snails
their eggs over the water, you need to supply enough air space ( 15cm/6 inch).
- Inca a aestivation
period in the mud before they breed successfully (does not apply to the most
common species).
- For those species that
lay are gonochoristic (separated genders), a male and a female snail are
needed(obvious).
- Inca snails reproduce
when the temperature climbs with abundance of food available in conjunction.
Eating Diet
Their diet should even
be supplemented with sinking pellets (spiraluna, alga) and they are going to
also appreciate the occasional vegetable. Their special favorites are blanched
shelled peas, zucchini and cucumber medallions and lettuce leafs. Any uneaten
food should really be taken from the tank after 24 hours, to prevent it from
fouling the water.
Gold Inca Snail Environment & Habitat
My Gold Inca Snail
population appear happy and do well in a planted aquarium. I suppose the reason
is a tank with plenty of live plants is never actually too clean, meaning that
there is a plentiful supply of edible vegetation shedding from your live plants
themselves (see note involving live plants below). And when a Gold Mystery
Snail takes a live aquarium plant is bitten off by a couple once in a while, I
chalk it up as its having some fresh vegetation as a snack.
Mating
Unlike most snails
available in the aquarium trade, apple snails aren't hermaphroditic and you
want both a male along with a female for breeding. The most easy way to achieve
this is to purchase six snails, which basically guarantees that you will have
at least one female and male.
